About Musikalliansen

What is Musikalliansen?
Musikalliansen’s principal task is to provide practising freelance musicians with security in the form of employment with conditional tenure. Musikalliansen receives state funding from the Ministry of Culture via the Swedish Arts Council. The instrumentalists, singers, musical artists and conductors that are employed by Musikalliansen work within areas that receive public cultural funding.

A large and important part of Musikalliansen’s work is development in different forms. This development aims at providing musicians with an increase and improvement in job opportunities and to equip them with the tools they need that will inspire them to find new audiences, new stages, new forms of concerts and new co-operation whilst retaining their artistic integrity. The majority of Musikalliansen’s development measures also help professional musicians that are not employed by Musikalliansen.

Another part of Musikalliansen’s work is taking a look at the employment market in order to analyze ways of improving conditions for freelance musicians.

Musikalliansen is not a commercial agency for performers.

Employment

Alliance Models - Alliansmodellen
There are currently three alliances within the artistic areas music, theatre and dance. What these three areas have in common is that they employ freelancers who are professionally active within enterprises that receive public funding. Employees are selected based on how long they have been practising rather than quality or demand. The alliances work actively with training programmes and mediation in order to increase the employees’ chances of being given more work - the less they are employed by the alliances, the more funds there are available to employ more freelancers.

The Enterprise
Besides the employment of musicians, Musikalliansen’s enterprise also consists of training programmes, mediation and seminars.
Musikalliansen also works to:

  • Improve conditions for freelance musicians on the employment market through co-operation and networks.
  • Stimulate development and mobility within the area of music – nationally and internationally.
  • Increase the security of freelance musicians and reduce their dependency on unemployment benefits.
  • Create a knowledge bank with regard to the artistry and employment market of freelance musicians.
